Let's Go Fly a Kite

Something about spring just yells, "Enjoy Life."  Just a gentle reminder as the windows are opened, the rains softly fall, the flowers pop their heads through the soil, awakening from the slumber of winter and the call to come outside whispering from the breeze..."Awake, Enjoy Life."  It also beckons us to go fly a kite.

“Let's Go Fly A Kite” from Mary Poppins

Mr. Banks:
With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You're a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite

Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite!

Bert:
When you send it flyin' up there
All at once you're lighter than air
You can dance on the breeze
Over 'ouses and trees
With your fist 'olding tight
To the string of your kite!

Following the instructions from Mary Poppins, (now who doesn't follow Mary Poppins!), Benjamin and I made us a kite.  Celebrating March, we assembled a kite and took it to the open field to fly.  You know flying a kite is a lot of work...you have to run, you have to throw it up in the air, you have to slowly release the string, avoid the tree limbs and then step back and watch it soar.  As I played with my youngest child, I remembered Erma Bombeck's article on kids are like kites.(click to read)  My season of watching some of my children as they soar is exhilarating.  Holding my breath as I see them lose altitude or head toward the encumbrance of  tree limbs, as well as delighting and rejoicing when I see them soar high, where others can now see the beauty God has created in them.  As I watch those kites fly, I am also training two others to fly solo one day also.  The lesson learned while flying a kite....it is easier when the kite soars high with the wind....effortless, no struggling, relaxed...like when I allow the Lord to bring me up high with Him.  Soaring with Him allows this mother to release their strings and allow them to soar.

My Let's Go Fly a Kite Spring Mantel
May you enjoy March, may you Go Fly a Kite and have a child's heart.  May God be the wind beneath you as you soar into all the adventures... with the dips, spirals, nose-dives, circles, then gliding with the plans He has for you and your family.

When was the last time you flew a kite? How about the last time you sang the song from Mary Poppins?

Last summer I watched the kids fly a kite, I don't know if I have ever done one myself! I am singing that song now in my head. It was in the 50s here today :) but rainy. Glad spring has sprung in Texas :)

Good Morning! The song is playing over and over again in my head! I learned ALL of the Mary Poppins songs when I was a kid playing the piano. SUCH fun. That one was one of my favorite's though (Spoon Full of Sugar was hard to beat, haha!) It's funny you should mention kites. We were down by the beach both Sat. and Sun. (such a gorgeous week-end in California) and there were sooo many kites flying around down there. I told my hubby I want to get my grandsons down there and fly some kites. It's such a perfect place to fly them. Always breezy, and few trees or wires...so there is always an abundance of them going down there. We seldom make a trip to the beach without a couple of kites. Looking forward to that soon. Glad you had a good week-end with that cutie of yours. I am off to read that post you mentioned. Have a wonderful day! HUGS

Beautifully written my friend and I love the analogy, oh so true. I haven't flown a kite in a while, but spring has been calling me to do so, and this child at heart plans just that. I love the photos of father and son flying the kite. and when I am flying my kite, I will be thinking of you and your words of encouragement, while the Lord brings me up closer to Him.
Enjoy your day.
Hugs,
Sue

Janette,

When I read your post, it reminded me when I was a young girl who attempted many times to fly a kite in her own backyard, but it never worked! The kite would always drag to the groud, ugh! So, that activity didn't last very long. :)

As for singing a Marry Poppins song?? LOL! I don't think I ever have! :)

Blessings,

-Lady Rose

what fun - I remember some great times flying kites with the boys. But, what great inspirational thoughts. It does the heart good when we see them soaring and not plummeting. Cute mantel, great idea!

I love to fly kites- need to get one for the boys. Thanks for the nudge! It's been way too long.

I can't wait to fly a kite again! But it must warm up a bit first...

Is your blog going private? I couldn't get in for some reason, so I googled it and got in that way...

What a great post! I haven't flown a kite in forever but have great memories of flying them when I was a child. Loved your mantle decor, so pretty. Thanks for such a nice welcome to March!

Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way! :) My girls absolutely love Mary Poppins, and Emmy's dance recital song is "Supercalifragilisticexpialidotious."

(I'm sure I didn't spell THAT right, and spell check has no suggestions!)

You are right, great minds do think alike.

I have a feeling that song will be stucck in my head for a while now! Letting those kites to soar or nosedive is one of the most hearrtwrenching things for a momma to do. It's a lesson I'm learning the hard way I'm afraid. Beautiful post...one i needed to hear.

Janette, you are such a breath of fresh air. Yes, go fly a kite sounds like such fun. Figures you would do just that.

Debbie

You know, Janette - I can't remember the last time I flew a kite (though I'm pretty sure it was before the last time I was TOLD "Go fly a kite!")

I love that song from Mary Poppins.

You drew so many wonderful spiritual parallels - I so enjoyed them. I am still finding it hard to let my "all-grown-up" sons fly free from me. I can only do it by knowing that God holds their strings...

GOD BLESS!

As soon as I saw the title of your post that song was humming around in my head. We are so alike my friend! Here in the desert with all of our wind you'd think that flying kites would be good, but we always seem to have conflicting winds and they don't ever seem to do as well as they did where I grew up.
It's fun to try though :-)
Blessings,
Marcia

So glad you wrote the words out to the song, I love that song and hum it to myself when I am flying a kite. I also like Feed The Birds and the part with the chalk paintings. Nothing better than flying a kite, in fact, that was my husband and my first date, flying a kite and having a picnic. I knew he was the one for sure when he bought a kite for me.
He still likes to send outside with me and fly a kite. :) AW such simple pleasures.

i love the analogy of kite flying and soaring
on His wings. you are so clever at adapting
life to lessons.

the last time i flew a kite was at least 10
years ago. it's like the last baseball you
throw. you never know when it's the last
time!

thanks for the tip at my place, but i was
actually asking for money. :)

Last week we were watching some kids down the street flying kites - but since ours broke long ago, my creative children made their own - it was so much fun!!

Mary Poppins? Just watched it a few days ago - now those songs stick in your head!!!

Let's Go Fly a Kite is one of the many songs my children loved to sing when they were small.

This is a beautiful post, an invitation for all of us to have the heart of a child again.

Celebrate March... I like that. This is a beautiful month for me.

I sang in a trio in high school We sang that song! I can still hear our 3-part harmony.

Have fun, Janette!

Beautiful Post! And beautiful Kites too! Mary Poppins was the very first movie I saw in a movie theater...just me and my mom one afternoon very long ago :). Oh, I loved that movie...and the memory of seeing it with my mom is heartwarming! Just like I'm sure Benjamin will always remember flying his kite with you -priceless! Love the analogies!
Hope you enjoyed your dance on the breeze! xo

I love that song from Mary Poppins! What a great project to do, too. We have such strong winds here that my children would actually fly away with their kites, but I'd love to try this anyway.

Blessings to you, my friend!

this is whimsical and so much fun! I have just wrapped our 6 yr.old grandson's gift for his birthday party later, and out of the bag of stuff are 2 kites!!! It's so neat that you are still in the kite flying years, and even though the others are grown, this is Benjamin's childhood... so you get to do it all with new eyes through him! I think I'm a little jealous!

I also love what Sharon said and I sure have been invited to 'go fly a kite' more than once!! :)

We loved flying kites with our kids. Looks like you had a wonderful time!

And yes, who doesn't love Mary Poppins? Poor old Mr. Banks.

On one trip to San Francisco, we bought a very long dragon kite in Chinatown. It was marvellous... but difficiult to get aloft.

Is it spring there? For us, it's not quite here yet. Enjoy!

What a fun post! Your mantel is awesome! Too bad our rain isn't falling gently, but rather in sheets w/ thunder claps and raising our creek a bit too high for comfort... Oh well, I'll sure think of you and Mary Poppins next time we fly our kites.
hugs,
Leslie
PS- when YOU gonna visit Cyber Sister? ;-)
