How Is Your Posture?

google image
Recently my posture has been on my mind.  I know, that means I have too much free time on my hands.  Through my gym visits I started to notice I had become lazy in how I carried myself.  Just a quick glance in the store windows showed that I am allowing gravity to shorten my posture, while affecting my attitude.  Somehow I allowed the worries of the world to lower my shoulders.  I know better...or else I use to know better.  All those hours of dance lessons taught me how to carry my body...I needed a refresher course.

I began to align my posture and you know what????    I noticed a change.  I noticed I felt slimmer...and at this time in my life anything helps, even if it is just a mental thought.  I noticed that when I lifted myself up and walked with proper posture I felt a mental boost.  Who knew?

I decided to research the benefits of good posture and look what I found.
  • you look 10 pounds lighter - now that is a diet plan I can follow
  • you appear more confident
  • affects your health inside
  • your chest being open instead of contracted says to other - I am ready to listen
  • back straight communicates pride
  • allows you to breath easier and deeper...well I need that also
  • helps your muscles and your joints...all 50 plus-year-old need this
  • changes your frame of mind...oh I need that benefit!!
I have already observed most of these benefits by just being cautious of my posture.

I realized how easy it has been to communicate through how I hold myself and through doing so allowed the enemy to weigh me down.  Shoulders back, stand up straight...stop slouching!!!   A new memo to myself.

Matt. 11:30 -For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

How is your posture?

yep, me too Janette! I am intentiionally working on my posture! That old satan wants us to slouch and put our heads down. NO!! I've been encouraged just this morning on this same thing, and like Oswald Chambers said..."When you know you should do a thing, and do it, immediately you know more." That works for my physical posture and my spiritual posture.

I am standing tall right beside you! :)

I'll stand straighter today...thanks to your post. Hope to remember tomorrow!

GREAT post! I have noticed that mine is abysmal lately. Partly, that big bosom is to blame. It likes to drag me down.

This post makes me think that I've let life do that too.

The Farm Sister has perfect posture because she has a steel rod in her back. It always looks so wonderful.

I am very, very inspired to retrain myself better.

Thanks for this post. I needed it.

And I just this morning saw the wonderful post below. To God be the glory!

If you think about it, your posture helps with all our inside organs. Instead of squishing them, we can help them.
Of course I need to breath more and deeply.
Great post!

I have to say, I have been letting the cares of the world weigh me down. I know that I see myself in the the reflection and I wonder where the brave person went.
This is a good reminder to see how I need to change my posture. I really was thinking your were going to talk about being on my knees rather than sitting at the computer. :)

Good morning! I have noticed A LOT recently how much better everything feels if my posture is good just sitting, let alone standing. Sooo important. And spiritually? Well, same thing applies doesn't it? Thanks for all this...enjoy your day!

Great observations, Janette! Posture says so much about a person, and I'm so thankful Mama always made me "sit up straight." It's served me well through the years and somehow helps me keep moving forward even when the burdens of life try to drag me down. ...I wonder what else our physical appearance says about our spiritual health. Something to think about...

Dear Janette, I try to remind myself of my posture. I also can hear my dear mother's voice in my head saying, "stand up straight".
This list is very true. The smallest of changes can make a big difference in attitude. Thank you for reminding me. Blessings dear. Catherine xo

I found found myself sitting up straight as I read this - lol Thanks for the great advise :D

I was slouched over in a chair as I was reading this. ha! Made me sit up straight. :) I need to do this too. Years of being tall made me slouch-I hated feeling like the Jolly Green Giant around all of my friends and so I found over time that I would slouch to keep from being so much taller than everyone else. I am working on the 30 pounds I want to lose so if sitting and standing taller helps with 10 (even if it only looks that way ) I am all for it. I still have photos and a card to mail you. Mom and dad left-we have VBS this week and just finished dance so I hope to get it mailed by Friday when my world slows down a bit. :)
Hugs-love ya

Good advice! I always feel better when I stay aware of my posture--trouble is I rarely do! I'm going to try and do better after reading this.

You always have the most useful random information! I love that you share what is giving you a boost... it always gives me one too. Thanks friend from the bottom of my constricted (soon to be released) heart. :)

Blessings, Debbie

AND that ache in my neck disappears when I roll my shoulders back and lower them instead of hunching over!!! Amazing how such a little change can make a big difference! Now, if I could just do it all the time! ;) blessings ~ tanna

Great post! Posture is one of the first things I notice about someone and agree with everything stated in your post. Since I'm approaching my 60th birthday I am ever aware of my posture. Yikes!

Blessings!

Not so good, as dh is always asking me to straighten my shoulders. My spiritual posture needs some straightening too, Janette, thanks for reminding me,this is a great analogy, and a great post. I always leave here, blessed, challenged and satisfied as you allow me to stop, and rethink.
Please tell Farmer Benjamin, hello and give him a hug from me. I think of you both so much,
Enjoy your day,
Hugs,
Sue

I was viewing a photo of me next to my two sister a while ago and noticed that my posture was awful. Right there then I made a note to myself to lift up - shoulders back - head forward and SMILE..wink! Yes, indeed a good reminder - while sitting here on my bed reading this guess what I did - Yes, that's right I straighten up - shoulders back - chest out and head up.. Thanks for the reminder since I am over 50 and need the reminding - wink!

Great post, just stumbled upon your blog and I love it.

My posture is pretty good but I guess there's always room for improvement, thanks for this info!

All good points. I tend to sag at my desk and then it feels awkward to straighten up! I'm with you...chest up!

How's my posture? Better after reading your post! I too, knew all of that from years of dance classes as well. Thank you for reminding me how important good posture is for good mental and physical health.
