She bounced into my master bedroom, running for the closet to grab my wedding dress. She is very familiar with the dress, she has played in it through the years. She excitedly tells me the design she wants for her future wedding dress and how she will convert my dress into her own. She decides she will try on my dress while telling me we will probably have to take it in a lot. To her surprise and my totally delight (this has now become a joke) she couldn't fit in my dress! She is larger than her mother of 33 years ago. She was horrified and I just giggled. My daughter isn't big in anyone's imagination or standard...she is model quality, but at the time of my wedding I was a dance major in college....totally fit and trim. I reminded her that I was even smaller after I had had her...my fourth child, but life and additional children had expanded my figure.
Isn't if funny how they can never envision you ever being young?
Nor does she ever envision me as being smaller!
I never intended my only girl to wear my dress. I have always wanted her to have her own...and she will. It is her...not me! We also both wanted a piece of my dress worked into her own. This weekend I sewed lace from my own dress onto my only daughter's wedding dress. The same lace that I wore almost 33 years ago will escort my daughter on her wedding day.
I prayed as I sewed each stitch into place. I asked the Lord to bless this union and form them into one for His glory.
I loved this poem, so I am sharing with you today. The soon-to-be Bride was beautiful in her Bridal pictures...but you can't see until after the wedding day.
Shes been dreaming
'bout her wedding dress
since she was a little girl..
white with lace, and flowing,
accents made of pearl
Mother watches daughter
trying on the dresses....
her daughters now a future bride
and the older one confesses,
she sees that little girl, again..
her eyes sparkling with joy,
playing bride in bedroom sheets
and dreaming 'bout a boy....
She grew up...she met a man
who swept her off her feet..
they fell in love,he proposed to her,
and now her lifes complete...
Daughter's eyes are dancing, now..
shes found the perfect fit...
mother smiles proudly..
This one's surely it..
Daughter turns to mother
I love it-watcha think...??"
mother grins , she love it too,
then gives the girl a wink..
And in that very moment,
mother sees the change occur,
standing, now,in front of her
a woman - not a girl.
'bout her wedding dress
since she was a little girl..
white with lace, and flowing,
accents made of pearl
Mother watches daughter
trying on the dresses....
her daughters now a future bride
and the older one confesses,
she sees that little girl, again..
her eyes sparkling with joy,
playing bride in bedroom sheets
and dreaming 'bout a boy....
She grew up...she met a man
who swept her off her feet..
they fell in love,he proposed to her,
and now her lifes complete...
Daughter's eyes are dancing, now..
shes found the perfect fit...
mother smiles proudly..
This one's surely it..
Daughter turns to mother
I love it-watcha think...??"
mother grins , she love it too,
then gives the girl a wink..
And in that very moment,
mother sees the change occur,
standing, now,in front of her
a woman - not a girl.
I love it! I know it's going to be so beautiful and unique. The best of something old ,something new.:)
ReplyDeleteNow that poem must capture the very essence of such an event. (I don't know as my daughter has not married and doesn't think she'd like to. Wah!)
ReplyDeleteLove the stories you've told her. I agree. It's so difficult to see your mother as younger or slimmer or whatever. She just IS.
That should read stories you've told "here" but "her" might work, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a very sweet story. I just love it. I love that your lace from your dress will be on hers.
ReplyDeleteI have my Mom's wedding dress and I would have given anything to have wore it but she was super tiny.
Maybe I will see if my daughter can wear it for rehearsal. My Mom made her dress herself in 1957 so wouldn't that be cool. It a short dress like they wore in the 50s. Reading your post made me think of that. I love that she was wearing in in that picture when she was little.
It is coming so fast isn't it?
Gorgeous and so special!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you were sewing prayers along with lace into the hem of your daughter's dress. Simply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using lace from your dress on your daughters (and loved that you prayed with each stitched that you made) Enjoy these weeks leading up to your daughter's wedding.
ReplyDeleteWell I just love the whole thing, prayers, lace, wedding and daughter! Makes me tear up. I did a similar blog and poem on my granddaughters trying on my wedding dress... maybe we should collaborate and get everyone's stories and do a book! :)
ReplyDeleteI am SO thinking of you these days, it is such an exciting time, and my prayers for this precious couple are being lifted too. I can't wait to see the pictures of the whole thing.
This is all so beautiful, Janette...the dress, prayers as you stitched, the lace, the picture of her in your dress, all so sweet and dear.
ReplyDeleteI can hardly wait to see her in her wedding dress. Enjoy and cherish every special moment.
Love & Prayers~
I don't know what about this I love more! The fact that the dress didn't fit? haha Love it...NO, they can never picture us young, the fact that she will wear your lace on her dress? I LOVE this too...soo special. You praying over is as you sew? Brought tears to my eyes. I LOVE that you used to let her play in it, and you have a picture of her in it. Loved the poem too. See I told you... I LOVE it all. Can't wait to see her!
ReplyDeleteDoggone it, Janette. Where is that kleenex?? This was so touching. I can only imagine what a special time this is with you and your daughter. Enjoy every moment.
ReplyDeleteThat lace is so pretty. I can hardly wait to see the finished product!
The whole thing just reminded me, too, of walking down the aisle one day as the Bride of Christ! Won't we be so beautiful dressed in the white wedding dress of the Lamb?!
GOD BLESS!
What a precious post and so neat that she will have a part of your dress on hers. Beautiful poem! Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteI wore my mother's wedding dress, 32 years ago. It was more a money issue at the time I was the first of 4 girls and knew my folks didn't have a lot of money and her dress was available and really very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOut of 7 grandchildren (I have the only boy) it would be sweet if one of the girls was interested, but no takers yet.
Every prayer will be realized. What a blessing! I am happy for both of you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a labor of love, Janette. She's going to be a beautiful bride, and I love that a part of your dress will walk down the aisle with her. (She didn't fit in your dress? LOVE IT!)
ReplyDeleteYou have touched my romantic heart and tears came to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI like how you enjoy every moment of this wedding.
Beautiful and special! Sounds so exciting.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that your daughter will have part of your dress incorporated into her own! This is so special! :)
ReplyDeleteI giggled about the thin and now - awe.. so much changes through the years of family life -- I love it too about the wedding dress -- it's all wonderful to see you use a little of your dress into your daughter's dress - what a prefect joy now and added memories!!
ReplyDeleteHugs
What a wonderful idea.. lace from your dress to her dress. I don't assume that any of my girls will want to wear my dress but here's a way to integrate.. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you. The poem says so much about how we feel when our daughter has found her life partner and is beginning the chapter of life we were chosen to prepare for her for. Sigh.
Blessings, blessings, blessings, Debbie
that is precious as . . . lace! my mom made
ReplyDeleteher wedding dress into the ring bearer's
pillow for my daughter's wedding, adn i bring
it out every valentine's day.
lace, the fabric of our lives.
How beautiful! That dress is going to be so special with part of you sewn in there Janette. I love that. See, God knows all your needs and He is faithful.
