Change of Season Came in a Roar

Well if there was any doubt in North Texas that fall/winter has arrived, well this weekend announced her entrance with recorded breaking low temperatures.  This Native Texan family was caught off guard.  Camping boy was hanging in his hammock out in the woods Sunday night when the frost of change of season caught him at 34 degrees.  He entered the door trying to get warm and fussing about how his comforter didn't keep him warm enough.

Each year I love the first cold front.  I become all hyper with ideas of  what I am going to do with this change of season. Let's see....snuggle up with a blanket to read a good book
....head to the sewing room to sew
....grab some hand work that I have stored during the hot months
...curl up with a good movie

Too many choices.

I just enjoyed the cold weekend wearing double-layers of socks.  I spent time starting an upholstery job...a much loved chair needs a face lift.  I grabbed out my winter bedding and put away the light comforter.  I put on my to-do list that it is time to attack the ugly walls in my bedroom.   We all gathered around the television to watch our favorite University team NOT pull off a win, while enjoying a winter meal.

We had to have our favorite warm meal.

Cheese Soup
French Bread
Smoke Cheese  Chucks with Apple Slices

Now I need to go grab my basil and harvest before another cold front nips at her leaves.

What do you enjoy doing when the first cold front comes to visit?

  1. We had our first "cold" weather this weekend. It has been in the upper 50's and raining. Perfect weather for one pot meals, chicken noodle soup yesterday and beans with ham hock tonight...with corn bread of course...perfect southern meal.
My indoor projects this year is going to be sorting and cleaning out closets...not very creative huh? but so needs to be done. There are a few good books waiting for me to read though!

  2. We had our first cold weather yesterday too. Today is in the fifties and it feels great :) I made apple pie, had the windows open and lit my pumpkin scented candle :) Oh and slept without the a/c on for the first time in a long while.
    Have a great week!

  3. What happened to UT!! We watched that sad display but none of our teams did well yesterday...BUT we had stew, lit a fire and the spice scented candle and thrilled that the A/C didn't run non-stop.

  4. I am so glad you had one arrive. Of course we haven't had one yet, I am still in shorts and short sleeved shirt. I keep hoping. Ours is still out in the ocean, parked.
    They keep promising though.
When it does get cold I am thinking of dancing around the front yard. I will be so happy. Not to mention I look forward to being cold.
    Your soup looks wonderful.

  5. Today was a bit brisk. I made soup. Not too exciting... Your winter comforter is very pretty. (You may have to get out the spring one pretty soon. This cold snap surely won't last.)

  6. Well we haven't had one yet, but a gal can hope right? haha. Love both of your comforters. I do like to bake when it grows cold. Something with pumpkin in it. Oh, and light my scented Fall candles, and read and sew and curl up for short afternoon naps....Have a good week!

  7. We haven't had a cold front arrive ...yet. But I heard about yours on the news. I would welcome a little cool weather though. I would pull out my warm pj's and make some warm soup.

    Love you,
    Debbie

  9. 'bout the same as you! This past weekend included a hosting a small group and all I could think about was Hot Cider. At $5.99 a gallon, it was a real treat - but lasted to serve as appetizer for a small, extended family that gathered around our dining room table the next day.

That menu included a lot of "comfort" foods, believe me!

  10. It sounds like you have a "sandpail" list for the winter.

When we change things around, it really does add to the change of season.
    Nicely done!

  11. We also did NOT enjoy watching that same team you were watching as they lost their game, but we ARE enjoying the weather. Maybe especially in places like Texas, fall is so appreciated.
I made my deelish homemade spagetti and meat sauce and we had it for 3 days!
I am invigorated in this beautiful cooler weather. :)

  12. Our nights are cold now also but days in the beautiful 70s. We haven't turned on our fireplace yet but it's so nice to take the chill off in the morning. I like getting out of summer clothes and into warmer, fuzzy clothes. I love the slow entry into the holidays before the craziness starts.

I love soups and breads also. Steve loves everything except chili - and it took him almost 2 DECADES of marriage to tell me he didn't like my chili. He didn't want to hurt my feelings. Wasn't that sweet?

  13. The cold weather has already hit us and we are loving it. Kim built the first fire in the downstairs wood stove and we've been sipping hot drinks, going for walks in the cool with our doggie, crafting. Fun! We love this time of year. Your soup looks delicious.

  15. Hi Janette - I love all those luscious colors in your bedroom. And I'm enjoying this cooler weather altho it warmed up a bit today. I wore flip-flops today to work. I usually dress for the weather, not the season. So, I guess I'm glad I haven't put away my summer capris yet - it's gonna be warm this weekend!

That soup looks great - I had chicken n dumplins this weekend!

  16. Love the spring and fall looks for your bedroom. I have a friend that does that but I've never been one to change mine with the seasons. But, I do like the look it gives.

And, the soup, one of my favorite things about cooler weather. We are big on soup and stews.

    Happy week Jeanette!
