Recently, Brer Rabbit's reverse psychology came to my mind. I contemplated my own train of thoughts on being a wife and mother. Let's just throw out Dr. Sears, Dr. Spock, BabyWise and any marriage book I could think of and I will just become Brer Rabbit.
Brer Rabbit was able to escape all kinds of mischief by manipulating his opponent. He would just tell them exactly what he didn't want. "Oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease Mr. Fox.........pleeeeeeeeeeease don't throw me into that there briar patch." Mr. Fox thinks, okay if he doesn't want to go into that brair patch then that is exactly what I am going to do. Mr Fox throws him into the briar patch and Brer Rabbit hops off with a joyful shout, "Mr Fox...I was born and raised in that briar patch..................born and raised."
So my thoughts went down Brer Rabbit's reverse psychology trail.....
Here I am speaking to my family:
You can fill in your own blank. It is easier when they are little, like Benjamin, and you are training habits in their lives, while they are hiding God's word in their hearts through memorization. You can cheer and feel so accomplished over their made beds and their walk in spiritual disciplines. It is harder as they enter their world and start to throw out your convictions to form their own. You pray they will turn to the one source that doesn't use reverse physiology, but is ageless truth.
God's word doesn't change with the culture, the new trends, or the younger generation that says, "well it truly is okay." His word has seen every culture and it stays the same. There truly isn't anything new under the sun and the only thing to truly keep us grounded is His Word...while the culture turns to Brer Rabbit mentality or the newest phase.
I am glad I stand on solid ground when everything else around is sinking sand and the wind will change in a new direction tomorrow.
*A note in my defense...I had not read Kathleen at Sassy Granny's post before I wrote this, nor had I even read the title of her post. When I got to her post and saw we were on the same subject of Brer Rabbit, I stopped myself from reading until I posted. You might enjoy what take she has on Brer Rabbit....I am going there now.
Sorry about the blue text...I have no clue, blogger has a mind of its own today.

yes God's truth never changes...but man's traditions are not always truth. so i am thankful for some changes. we as flawed humans can major on the minors and forget the spirit of God's truth/law.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Who knew Uncle Remus would have such an influence these many long years after penning his wonderful books?
ReplyDeleteOur posts are different in many aspects, but not trajectory. I love the unchangeable nature of God you highlighted. No wonder we are able to navigate briar patches in leaps & bounds.
Lovely, my sweet Brer Blogger-Buddy!
Good morning! Soo funny you should both of used Brer Rabbit. (great minds right?) I LOVE it... You have spoken such truth here of course. This world of ever changing, shifting uncertainties leaves me so overwhelmed at times. How I love to hold on to the one thing you can really count on to stand strong and ALWAYS be the same..Hope you have a great week-end Janette
ReplyDeleteLove this...you're so funny and it is good that God doesn't use that kind of psychology on us. He just tells it like it is.
ReplyDelete(I was more of a threat sort of mother. "Don't make me come in there and clean that room because you will deeply regret it. Any money I find will be mine. Anything I don't like will be tossed. You won't know the place." )
A happy weekend to you and all your family.
Great minds... ;)
ReplyDeleteWe are blessed to love an unchangeable God!! Amen. blessings ~ Tanna
I hear what you are saying.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same.
But I keep this in my heart...
"Train up a childin the way he should go;even when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6
Sometimes I think that God thinks I'm using reverse psychology in my prayers when He gives me the opposite of what I'm praying for :) But He doesn't change, He knows what's going on, and I will trust in that (without fear, if possible), even when I'm sitting in the briar patch.
ReplyDeleteI am so thankful that God is absolute!
ReplyDeleteVery important thoughts today. I loved the verses you chose. Sorry, I don't have any deeper thoughts today, I am watching my grands today, they spent the night and I am brain dead. I have no clue how I did this for so long. Babies are so much work. :)
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can so relate to this post. [o; I will think of this one often when I am talking to my older ones that I am "trying" to encourage to do________ . [o=
ReplyDeleteBlessings and ((HUGS))

I loved this post, Janette and yes, I do pray that they will turn to the only One who dispenses ageless truth.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good post ...
ReplyDeleteLove this comment that you make ...

So very true ... On CHRIST the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand ... He is eternal.
Thanks for stopping by and encouraging me today ... my new goal is to post photos of thankfulness each week as I see God in my ordinary life x
We are walking with L as he is finding his convictions. He is meeting many new people, many new thoughts, many different ways of seeing and doing things. Praying for continued wisdom through these growing years.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your post and the connection you made with Brer Rabbit. Visits with you always point to the Truth in practical and encouraging words.
ReplyDeleteinteresting and insightful for sure!!
ReplyDeleteI do not think you can buy that book anymore..it is banned in the US!!
Funny. The Briar Patch story is the one I remember best of Uncle Remus'. Maybe because my father became SO very dramatic as he read it....
ReplyDeleteJehovah ... who never changes. In these crazy days that is a great comfort.
ReplyDeleteLol...tried this once on my kids. Didn't work. They shrugged their shoulders and said, that's great Ma....but I know people who do this to hurt others. To make some believe their intentions are good when they aren't. The good thing...He knows and always turns things to our favour. I love your sense of truth and how you show it.
ReplyDeleteThe only word I can think of to add is:Amen.
ReplyDeleteDear Jeanette, thank you bunches for this truth and reminder. So true. He is our Rock, ever faithful, ever true! Wishing you a very joy-full Lord's Day!
ReplyDeleteSuch good thoughts. Thank you for your honesty Jeanette, it's always refreshing!
ReplyDeleteThe same yesterday, today and forever... it's everything to know that! The one constant... great way to send another reminder of His truth.
