The War is On

"You are going down!" echoed in my ears as I gathered my partner for the annihilation of the broccoli destroying worms. This "want-to-be", "merciless", suburban farmer" was calling it WAR.  Benjamin and I would give Mr McGregor a run for his money.

You can't hide!!!  You are going down...can you tell I live in a boy's world, these are the words they taunt each other with while competing in a game?

Benjamin got excited to see them inch their ways up his arm......and his gift of mercy was revealed when I declared they had to be killed.  "No we can't kill them."  So off I ran to find a rescue container.

I just wanted this......

NOW WHO IS GOING TO WIN THIS WAR?  The grocery store is looking better everyday and I am soooooooooooo glad we don't have to depend on my gardening.  I did pick one radish...now what do you do with just one?

  1. i have not planted anything in a couple of years but my son cleared out our raised beds and planted a few veggies. we have deer and the raised beds are like table height for them.
will see how they do this season!

i love the idea of a garden, working in it is another thing all together!!

  2. Id say 'frame the radish!'...

My attempt at a garden was in Austin and I had hundreds of zuccini's growing like wildfire, and then the deer came one night...

So I now depend on Kim at 'My Field of Dreams' to do my farming, and she does it so well.

But don't give up... maybe green onions or string beans??? :)

  3. "LOVED THIS"...not the worms...the BOYS!!! God's plan for me was to GARDEN, SO he blessed me with 3 SONS! If it weren't for them I would be affraid of my own shadow in the "WILD OUTDOORS",hehe! I have FARMED when they were little and FLOWER GARDEN NOW that they are all grown(my sons)... The word KILL is not an option here. It it would be eaten by bugs or varmints "It's most of the time NOT GROWN"! Flower gardening is done under a VERY WATCHFUL EYE! NOT EASY when you have LOTS OF LAND and a lake attracting LOTS of hungry mouths. RELOCATE is a common word for things like MICE! YUP, I relocate the little BUGGERS!!!
Thank you for your post, I've have LOTS OF jars with crawlies in them!
    Big Hugs to you,
    Donna

  4. We are not as merciful at our house. We found caterpillars down inside the leaf tubes of our onions, and the kids and I scooted them out and smushed them. Very disgusting! I decided I feel no sympathy for creepy crawlies that get in my house or my garden. They have plenty of other places they can be:)

  6. I wish you and Benjamin could see me smiling as I was reading this, I have the same battle with worms, Oh how they love broccoli, and cabbage. Once I though I had hand picked all of them off, and while blanching some broccoli heads for freezing I saw all these worms float to the top, needless to say the grocery store looked pretty good to me.
Tell Benjamin he is going to be a great farmer!

Sorry I missed your last post, but enjoyed it today so much.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  7. Haha the joys of gardening. One year the tomato worms were eating all of our tomato vines so we got a aquarium put soil in it and tomato vines and watched the whole live cycle. Pretty fun. :)
Oh the bugs, well since all anyone like in our house is one radish well that would be just enough. :)
Have fun and yes, thank goodness for the grocery stores. :)

  8. You eat it, darling, you eat it. :-)
I so love this post! Amateur gardener (if one can call me even that much) here too. Oh, how I can identify! Blessings, my friend!

  9. I am giggling with you because my husband says we could have bought tomatoes for the next five years for the amount of money we put into raised beds, soil and plants. All I can say is we better get a bumper crop! Hang in there fellow suburban warrior. Patty

  10. Good morning! I think one radish is a HUGE crop compared to mine! haha....I just never did have the patience for this, and the bugs pushed me right on over to the joys of the grocery store. I live out any of my "famer" feelings through Sue and Kim....I bet Benjamin just loves this. Your jar of worms sure brought back memories. It's been a long time. Hope you have a good week-end! HUGS

  12. I guess with one radish, you wait for some more.

I can relate to the broccoli/worm wars because we had them the last time I grew broccoli. I won. You will win.

Unfortunately with the tomatoes, it was a great worm victory. Pout.

  13. The green worms give me the shivers. I am a wimpy gardener even though I like it.
    The radish is pretty!

  14. Just spray them with the dish detergent/water spray. It gives them the runs so they'll leave your broccoli alone!

  15. Yuck on the worms! I love broccoli anyway it is fixed. Yes, the grocery store may be your best bet. :o) Happy weekend!

  16. There is always the fun in the process. We have had small, urban gardens with very little to show for our efforts, but watching the plants grow and sharing that with Logan was the real treasure. Enjoy!

  17. Let the grocery store win because this experience you can't buy anywhere. How fun to explore and learn about God's creations both broccoli and the worms.

  18. Make a lovely garnish for your salad from the store with that lone radish. ;) ENJOY this experience. blessings ~ Tanna

  19. Absolutely amazing to me that you are harvsting and dealing with pests already! But hark... what is that I hear? Why, it's the sound of the lawn mower! Yes, we have grass growing... ;)

  20. Well, good luck with your war, Janette, especially since you have a young worm rescuer residing with you. Life gets a bit complicated at times, doesn't it?

  21. To answer your question...you eat it and enjoy every last bite! [o= Yes there are times pesky invaders make garden a trial. I suggest finding some organic home bug sprays to spray on your plants.

Keep the upper lip and keep on trying. I am sure you and your ds will appreciate every veggie you eat from now on b/c you know what it takes to grow it. So keep on learning and enjoying what you are blessed with. But in the same note thank the Lord for those farmer's produce we get to buy.

    Blessings and ((HUGS))
