I Interrupt the Previous Scheduled Post

I interrupt the previous scheduled kitchen re-do post to have....  well a table talk!

I love my tables.  I brought them all with me to our new dwelling.  They are just sentimental pieces to me.
This table was bought when we only had five kids without any expectations of more, however,
that is not how the kids saw it.
This table seats eight and we only had seven, so they all said, "well that means one more Wright!"
At this time their ages ranged from 15 to 2.
So when our future daughter-in-law started eating meals with us...well  she completed the 8...we thought.
Benjamin would enter the picture just years later to complete our family of 8, along with our new daughter-in-law (who technically came first), which extended our family to 9.  For years Ben used the high chair.
Now family gatherings are around the large formal dining room table.
There is my story...here is the transformation this table has been through as our family also transitioned through life.

The table began its life with us with its original clear pine table top with white legs.
This worked great for years and then my painting bug hit me.
About 7 to 8 years ago I got out all my paints and attacked that white boring table.

This is when it is expanded to full size.  Remember it has been in use for 8 years.
The more you use it the more it looks authentic.
The layers are red, gold, off-white, stencil and a stain.

The legs have an extra coat of paint...black, because I was experimenting with leaving them black.
I took my electric sander and danced around  the surface, leaving worn marks, after all the coats of paint were applied and completely dry.
The stain went on last to age the look of the paint and bring protection with its polyurethane.

I sanded over the stencil to produce worn-out edges.

Chairs have multi-coats also...see I told you I had the gold before.

There is the tale of my table and I am sticking with it.
Right now I am dreaming about what colors I might add or paint so it enhances my kitchen.
That will be for another post and another day.
See you soon from the finished kitchen.

  1. I love that your table has it's own tales to tell.
I think it looks wonderful the way it is, yep, the same thing happened. Only we would be sitting at dinner and someone would look up and say, " Someone is missing." So there would be a baby soon. Such a nice post.
    Have fun on that kitchen!

  3. Oh why am I not surprised that my kindred spirit would have the same "thing" for tables that I do? haha When we moved a year ago I told my hubby all I really cared about is the dining room table. If anything else gets broken, or scratched, or lost, or ruined, OH WELL...but my table guard with your life!! It holds sooo many memories and will be used God willing for years to come as we all gather around it....well, would you believe it was the ONLY thing that got broken? I thought my hubby would flip out....I felt bad. But they repaired it (perfectly btw you would never see or know) and it has gone to hold more memories....I have often wondered what the Lord was trying to teach me here...

I LOVE yours and I am soo looking forward to seeing what you are going to do.

Have a good day my kindred friend!

  4. It's one of a kind and I'm sure that it speaks to your family of fellowship and food every time they are seated around it. I really like your stenciling.

  5. Ohhh I can't wait to see what you will do. I have a very worn out and tired table that I keep thinking of redoing. But alas it hasn't happened ...yet. I keep saying this spring I will do it. That was a few ( or many) years ago. [0=

I just might get real inspired this spring. [o= I hope!

    Blessings and ((HUGS))

  6. I love it! The stenciling is so pretty! And I love all the memories it has for you family. My oldest son carved his name in the CENTER of my pine farmhouse table. I can laugh about it now...not then but now.LOL! Those are the kinds of things that make our "stuff" much loved.:)

  8. I'm attached to my bedroom suite that we bought in PA for more than we could afford. I am not artistic enough to take paint to anything so I'm impressed with that ability.

I love your table story and what you've done to it. You're so brave!
I need to get a different table so I can feel free to paint mine too.
I use to jump right in with new ideas, but as I've gotten older I seem to have become too cautious.
You're inspiring me to try something new again.
    Thanks-Kimberly

  10. boomer!!!

i mean, bummer, that i don't have your
great taste! how in the world you could
imagine such beauty and then create it
    is beyond me.

it was a really fun tale leading up to it,
    too.

we both used the word 'boring' in our
posts, which makes me chuckle. great
    minds think alike . . .

which leads me to another BOOMER!

  14. I wish you were going to San Antonio too!!! Next year you should really consider going with us. It was the 8th-10th last year and the 7-9th this year so I am assuming it will be around the same time next year. We had an extra deposit we had put down last year but no one wanted it so we got rid of it. So, if you want to go next year when we make our deposit it cost $25.00. I will let you know-it would be so much fun to have you go too. I am always so blessed-I need to get away for a few days and get re-charged. :) Praying you have a great weekend dear friend.

    dining and consoles.There are just
so many lovely memories that revolve
around our dining tables. Yours is just beautiful, chairs too. Can't wait to see everything when you're finished.

  17. No tea? No cookies? What kind of table talk have we here. Ooops! Didn't mean to complain. Na ah!

I'm sure that if your table could talk, we would be well entertained. That is some wonderful work you turn out, Janette. You're very creative!

BTW, I have plain pine sitting in our kitchen just waiting for something exiting. Would you like to come over for some tea and cookies? And bring your creativeness and paints? :-)

    Blessings!

  18. Now see... that's the kind of thing that I love. As I'm discovering my style, I know one thing: I love pieces that have character. This one does.

And I'm waiting for the kitchen... anxiously waiting for the kitchen. I just know you're going to wow me.

  19. You are making me want to get up and CREATE.. something! I am floored at how productive you are, you just go for it and make it happen. Love that!

I had to laugh at Lea's comments above... it's hard to say much since they so thoroughly BOOMERED us last year. Still, we now have another McCoy brother, and he looks great.

Can't wait to see your finished kitchen!

  22. Think about all the wonderful family times around that table! Holidays, birthday, every-days, all the lessons taught, the prayers said, the little fusses between the kiddos at mealtime... I can see it all, cuz that's the way it was around our table! I do like what you did to your table with the paint and the stenciling...

  23. I'm sure if the table could talk it would have many tales to tell, it has listened to all the family conversations and shared joys and tears, the good and the bad. The table is often the place that keeps the family strong and together and those families who sit together stay together.

  24. I wish I had that kind of talent. My dining room table (informal) has a laminated surface, that when anything paper gets laid on it after it has been freshly wiped, it leaves a permanent imprint. I now have a Cheez-it logo embedded on my tabletop surface so have been depending on tablecloths to cover it. If I knew how, I would give the painting thing a try. Yours looks absolutely beautiful, and what a treat that you can keep such a family treasure!

  25. Love the table! And the story that came with it...

  26. Clever girl!

Janette, I just love your crafty ways! What an heirloom-in-the-making that table is. So many memories and stories in its well-worn surface.

The kitchen really is the center of family life - and I can tell that yours reflects the warm and giving heart of its wife and mother.

    GOD BLESS!
