Jesus Sang at Passover

image from photo bucket

This yearly celebration of Passover was different as Jesus assembled his disciples in the upper room.  He led his disciples in one of the Seven Jewish Feasts, which he observed throughout his life. (Luke 2:41) During the evening meal, Jesus led his disciples in singing of Psalms.  Tradition suggests they sang through seven hymns called the Hallel, which means "Praise God".  These songs were from Psalms 115-118.  The final hymn, called the Great Hallel, Psalms 136 was sung last. (some sources differ on which Psalms)

Jesus sang before Golgotha.

Mark 14:26 "When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives."
also in Matt. 26:30

Everyone in Jerusalem that evening sang the same hymns as Christ!  He, the author, sang his own compositions.  Jesus was singing about his own fulfillment of these hymns. The angels heard the singing  throughout Jerusalem being led by the author. Is that not a visual?  Doesn't this make you just stop in your tracks and shout Hallelujah to the King?

As I read through these scriptures this year, preparing for Passover and Easter, I was just so moved to imagine my God singing.  He was encouraging himself in songs, he was singing about himself.  He engaged in singing Psalms before His darkest hour.

Psalm 118:22-23 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving and will worship the Lord.  I will fulfill my vows to the Lord, in the very presence of all his people, in the courts of the Lord’s house – within you, Jerusalem.  Hallelujah! (Psalm 116:17-19).

I called to the Lord in distress; the Lord answered me and put me in a spacious place.  The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me?  With the Lord for me as my helper, I will look in triumph on those who hate me (Psalm 118:5-7).

I will not die, but I will live and proclaim what the Lord has done.  The Lord disciplined me severely but did not give me over to death (Psalm 118:17-18).

Heb. 2:12 - " I will declare your name to my brother. In the midst of the assembly, I will sing praise to you."

During this season of remembering our Christ, may you sing!  May you lift your voice; may you enter into His courts with songs of praise.  May we see our Saviour singing over us.  I hope you have time to re-read these Psalms with the thoughts of Christ singing them before he went to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  1. This was so cool...amazing to consider. And it reminded me immediately of an old scripture song we used to sing. I had to look it up...Zephaniah 3:17. I love that scripture songs come back when scripture may not. Have a great day, Janette. I can tell that you're enjoying Holy Week in a special way.

  3. I like this and I never thought about Jesus singing the Hallel. That is awesome. I haven't had a Seder in a long time. I need to do it again. I know nothing that makes the scripture come alive like that. I have done the 7 feasts once. I found a curriculum somewhere and we did it for school. It was awesome.

  4. Beautiful post, Janette! Love the thought of Jesus singing the words of the Psalms that He had authored. What a blessing that we have the opportunity to worship Him in song! Have a blessed week - Happy Easter!

  5. Wow...I never thought of Jesus singing. Wouldn't it be wonderful just to hear his voice. I can just imagine the deep, raw emotion sung in perfect pitch! One day we will hear Him sing!

  10. Janette,

I actually had my bible by my computer, so I looked-up Mark 14:26. It's "funny," but I have often over-looked the fact that they sang during the passover BEFORE going to Gethsemane. As Lorie stated, this important bit of information does definately bring a whole new dimension to these psalms.

All I can say is thanks and Wow! :)

  13. I am thinking about Christ singing in His darkest hour, and what a great example to us to sing in our dark hours, instead of complaining.
I will reread these Psalms Janette, and thank you for always giving me much to think about, and I join you and others in Giving Him Glory, Honor and Praise with Thanksgiving for what He did for all.
May you and your family have a most blessed Easter.
    Much love,

  15. I love Holy Week-I am a big fan of Christmas-love it but Easter always brings me to tears-from Palm Sunday until Easter I am always very weepy just thinking of what He actually did for me-ME and if it had still been only me He would have still gone to the cross and died for my sins. I can't wait to hear Jesus sing!!
Thank you for checking on me-we are good-crazy busy. Our church choir puts on an Easter Pageant every two years-we have been crazy getting ready for it-drama and singing-we have done two performances Sat and Sun and we do three more this week Thurs-Sat down at the Civic Center. Since we have only been there not quite a year now this is my first time to be in it and it is just amazing! I weeped the first night we did a full dress rehearsal and they acted out the death of Christ. It is if you are really there. Wish you all could come to see it-it really is amazing. But that has taken almost every bit of extra time and energy I have had. Looking forward to next week for a little down time.
Hope and pray that you and your family are doing well. Hope you have a blessed Easter dear friend. School is going ok. I am looking into the Sonlight Curriculum for next year. We need something different. Struggles this year-lots but I still feel it is what we are supposed to be doing with Alyssa. Thanks for asking.
    Love you-
    Jill

  17. Oh, I needed your post so much tonight! I've been distracted with so many things since our vacation, and I've been missing out on the joy of celebrating Holy week.

Thanks for helping me to refocus. I don't think I'll put on a Seder meal this year... but an Easter brunch sounds good. Our son has invited us to his church (Mars Hill, Seattle) and they're meeting at Quest field, a local sports arena. We will go to support him, of course. Somehow, that kind of service doesn't put me in the mood for preparing a special Passover dinner, as I've done in the past. (Singing, as Jesus and the disciples did, would be SO intimate!) I'm just grateful he wants to be involved in a male-friendly church.

    I've missed you Janette!

  19. Oh, Amen dear friend.

One of my favorite images in my heart is that of Jesus singing. When I stand near men as they sing, I often think that that must have been what it sounded like.

I never picture it to have a "trained voice" or formal sound, either. In my mind, it's the sound of simple men singing in their simple, manly way if you know what I mean.

Can you imagine what it will be like to sing in Heaven?

Can you imagine what was in his heart that night as He sang, "THIS is the day that the LORD hath made..."

  21. That is a great picture to go with this post.
If you look carefully, you can hear them talking. And you can hear Jesus singing!
Sounds funny but I can imagine it all taking place.

    Love this!

  22. I never 'saw' that before.... that Jesus was singing just his darkest hour.

Perhaps that's why Paul and Silas could do that in their prison cell -- they saw the living example of the possibility of being 'victorious' over it all.

Thanks SO much for that beautiful thought.

BTW, my first time visit. Glad I found your site.

  24. You know what, Janette? I had never, ever thought about that. Jesus singing? Jesus SINGING!!

Can you imagine what the angels thought? Did they join in?

And what a tremendous lesson you have brought to me - that Jesus sung praises in His darkest hour! Oh yes, what a testimony to the enduring faithfulness of our Savior.

    I just love Him!!

    GOD BLESS!

(I'm pretty fond of you, too! :)

  25. What wonderful scriptures that you have shared. I never thought about the part about Jesus singing the Hallet. We can learn so much about Jesus worshipping before He faced His darkest hour. A lovely post.

Blessed Easter to you and your family.

  29. wonderful post, Janette! I look forward to hearing Christ's glorious voice and to singing with Him! (and I know He will give me a voice worthy of heaven...until then, I'll just lip-sync) lol.
Seriously though, the thought of his voice and his presence fills me with joy. Rejoicing in His promises kept as we reflect on the sacrifice he made and the life He gives through His resurrection!
Bless you, sister ...and your precious family!

  31. It always makes me smile when I think about creation, when "all the morning stars sang together"; but I had not thought about Him singing over us.

    That makes me smile, too.
