Our four-year-old, who constantly asks for his Bible stories at night, listens to this conversation.
Out of the mouth of babes he says, "the little boy brought only five fish and two pieces of bread to Jesus." At this point he starts to fling his arms into the air showing how large it became. "Then", he continues, "there is more and more and MORE for ALL the PEOPLE." He is excitedly telling me that God took what little there was and He multiplied the offering given to Him.
I am silenced as the Lord starts to speak to my heart..."you of little faith."
Oh Lord help my unbelief! May I offer my five fish and two loaves to the Lord and allow Him to Multiply.

Oh how true is that..."out of the mouth of babes.." How wonderful though that he is soo obviously hearing the truth and wisdom of the Word from his parents. I LOVE it. I know what you mean though. Some of those prices at the farmers market seem orbital. sigh...and yet, how grateful we are to have the abundance that we do. ReplyDeleteWe are surrounded by fresh produce, straight from Amish gardens...tended and harvested by their own hands. The prices DO sound a little high sometimes, but when I actually pay attention to what grocery store prices are, they're really NOT so far off. In the summer, we try to eat more simply, spending money on less food of higher quality and with more flavor--local and seasonal. Somehow, it works out...much like the fish and the loaves.

Ah, yes, out of the mouths of babes. They have a way of keeping us humble. I find that Trader Joes has a lot of organic food for reasonable prices, although there is nothing like fresh produce.

So true, once again...out of the mouths of babes...how many times does God speak to us oldies through our young ones? Not to belittle a miracle, but to enhance how God speaks in our lives...I, too, thought at one time that eating healthy cost more. What I've found is that the healthier we eat, the more portion control we learn and we actually buy less food...my grocery budget hasn't changed much over the years, but the portions certainly have :)

I feel your pain. It takes a great deal more thought and planning to eat well when funds are tight... but it's not impossible, as your other commenters have said. Myletterstoemily's advice excellent, is similar to what I've read as well.
ReplyDeleteI donate to a national ministry called Angel Food Ministries... groceries for families in need--so much less than store prices--and purportedly healthy. Like the widow's mite and the woman with the small cruse of oil, I know that when I'm giving, the pipeline of God's blessing is moving through me. Giving increases my faith and also brings me peace.

ReplyDeleteYou know I think like you. I actually was blessed last night to pass my neighbors table of produce and buy the best sugar sweet cherry tomatoes for $2/pint. My family doesn't like tomatoes so I don't plant a lot of small ones. This was a true blessing (I was also very hungry after a long meeting) so I almost ATE THEM ALL in a 3 block drive! Beats stopping at 7-11 etc for junk food. The blogger in me wished I'd had my camera as his table was sooo pretty with a bounty of bright colors. An extra blessing of "eye candy!"
Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments and suggestions. The frustrations was over farmer market peaches, which I wanted over store bought peaches. Farmers market peaches were over $2.00 a pound, whereas the local grocery store was selling for 75cents a pound. I was wanting to put some peaches up.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a matter of choosing junk food over fresh produce.
I would love to have a small piece of land one day for a large garden and some chickens...that is in God's hand.
At this time I will be faithful to eat as healthy (organic, locally grown) produce as possible.
Yes, there isn't anything better than home grown tomatoes!!!
